Corzine Vows To Fight For Public Employees

While you were at work today, about six thousand public workers rallied in Trenton in support Governor Jon Corzine's 2007 budge plan. Corzine’s “hard choices” budget proposal would increase New Jersey State spending by $2.6 billion and impose new and increased taxes of more than $1.8 billion.

Pubic workers enthusiastically support Corzine’s budget because it contains no layoffs or cuts to state worker salary increases and fringe benefits. With growing concerns over the disparity between public and private sector pay packages, some lawmakers have suggested Corzine take action this year to rein in the cost of public employees.

Corzine refuses to compromise on his new spending and taxing plans, standing firm in his support for the state’s public employees, now making about 40% more than the average New Jersey worker in the private sector.

Corzine, appearing at the rally, said he stood with the unions. "I'll stand with you. I'll fight with you,'' he said.
Corzine has only begun his fight to protect his backers. By failing to rein in state spending this year, the Governor has set up a financial crisis for next year. Treasurer Bradley Abelow has said “even with the sales tax increase, the state will have to close a gap of at least $2 billion next year”.

You are being very unfair with your assesment of state employee salaries, 40% higher then their counterparts in the private sector is highly suspect. Where is your proof?, were are your comparison charts of jobs in state government and private sector. As an IT specialist within NJ state government, my counterparts in the private sector make significantly more then I do.
The way you began the blog, "While you were at work today" leads the reader to believe state workers were rallied in Trenton all day long. This was a lunch time rally which state workers used their lunchtime to attend this rally.

Fire ALL state workers. Let's see what we really need. 35 hour weeks, lifetime free medical bene's, pensions that are outragous. The only reason that motocrossed stays in his job is that he knows he can retire MUCH earlier than his private sector counterparts with a better retirement package.

State workers are parasites.

It's easy to cast dispersion on all state workers and not know what they do. The rumors are rampant as to what the benefits are and what they get for "lifetime" benefits, the truth is a lot less then you can imagine but, then again, no one wants to hear the truth. And, in response to Anonymous, I cannot retire much earlier then my private sector counterparts, and I work 45 to 48 hours per week.
