(Mis)Leading The Public To Higher Taxes
Paul Nelson at NJ Fiscal Folly has a good post on Governor Corzine’s budget presentation from this week’s public meetings. Nelson says, “It's not a bad presentation, but as I went through it I realized that it's a very misleading document.” Nelson notes three key problems with the presentation:
1.) It actually sugarcoats the debt problem
2.) It basically takes current programs and expense growth as a given
3.) It forces the conclusion: the only solution is higher taxes
As we previously posted, Bob from eCache attended Governor Corzine’s budget meeting at Rowan University and has written a good synopsis of the information presented in his post is More, More, More.

Corzine probably realizes that if he makes budget cuts in state and school aid to urban cities that are abbot districts, it will ruin him with machine politicians like Sharpe James in Newark, Nick Sacco in North Bergen, Jeremiah Healy in Jersey City, Albio Sires in West New York, and Brian Stack in Union City, all of whom are largely responsible for getting him elected in the first place.
Jon Corzine is in a rough spot. In order to do the right thing he has to bite the hand that feeds him. He knows full well what happens to people in his position when the machine is not pleased with you.
The big question that begs to be answered is whether or not Jon Corzine will be the, "courageous reformer", who seperates himself from the Democratic Machine and political bosses for the good of the state that his campaign staff and staunch supporters made him out to be. So far, as the Budweiser driving instructor used to say in the commercials all the time: "NOT SO GOOD!"
It's not just the Abbott spending. Corzine also has to do something about the excessive retirement benefits of the public sector unions, another voting bloc.
I'm not optimistic.
"It basically takes current programs and expense growth as a given"
Ever since he took office he as refused to address spending.
It will not truly have success, I feel like this.
