Zogby: NJ Gov Race Political Shocker Of The Year

Zogby weighs in on New Jersey's governor race:

Republican business executive Doug Forrester has gained significant ground on Democratic Sen. Jon Corzine, whose once double-digit lead has dwindled to a 44 percent to 43 percent statistical dead heat, according to a WNBC/Marist poll of 600 registered voters.

"What was supposed to be a coronation is actually turning into a bloody duel. Two weeks ago, I had Corzine ahead of Forrester by seven or eight points, so there isn't a doubt in my mind that this latest poll is accurate," said independent pollster John Zogby.

The Forrester campaign yesterday said the poll shows that Democratic corruption and scandal was a major factor in the race, as well as property taxes, issues that Mr. Forrester has been hitting hard in his campaign ads.

"These polls are tracking our internal polls. It's corruption, it's property taxes, it's Jon Corzine's connection to our former disgraced Governor Jim McGreevey and former disgraced Senator Bob Torricelli," said Sherry Sylvester, the Forrester campaign's communications director.

This is not good news for the Democrats that voters don't trust them as much. This could be the political shocker of the year," Mr. Zogby said.
You have to get a kick out of the Corzine campaign spin on the candidate’s freefall in the polls:

There's strong evidence that Jon Corzine's popularity is improving as the campaign continues." The campaign attacked Mr. Forrester for displaying a "negative and pessimistic attitude" about New Jersey.

The latest evidence that the race was dead even followed a recent Quinnipiac poll showing Mr. Corzine's once seemingly insurmountable lead had evaporated, putting him just four points ahead of his Republican rival.

Guys, that Maris poll is not right and I'm really suprised that Zogby is defending it.

The race is definitely tightening, but don't cite that poll. You'll lose credibility.

See these two posts from NRO -- The Buzz.

You said back in June that that would be the last race that Corzine won in New Jersey. A ballsey call then, but looking more insightful every day.

Anon,

This post was quoting an article that points to both the latest Marist poll (1 point difference) and Quinnipiac poll (4 point difference). How does this post have anything to do with our credibility? We didn’t make up the quotes and the article accurately cites both poll results. Everyone is free to discount both polls and Zogby’s remarks as wishful thinking or flawed sampling.

The NRO post you cite notes: “However, there have been a number of polls for New Jersey done recently, and they all show the race to be single digits in the gap between the candidates. The problems in the Marist survey due to a small sample size notwithstanding, it is clear that the race there has tightened. It is still Corzine's race to lose, but Forrester is in the ballpark."

Isn’t this the essence of our post?

NJ Cons,

We based our prediction on people realizing Corzine is not committed to property tax reform and has built his campaign around additional government spending - providing healthcare benefits to an additional 750,000 people, spending money on state owned business, etc, etc. He is not in really in sync with the needs of the majority of New Jersey voters. Obviously you can’t make New Jersey more affordable by spending more taxpayer dollars. People clamor for property tax relief and Corzine comes up with proving an additional 10% increase to rebates. Will anyone who actually stops to calculate Corzine’s “Real” property tax relief be happy with an extra $65 in year 1 and a whopping $300 by year 4? Not likely. Now he can hope people won’t stop to figure it out, turn out the tax receiving voters and still win. It’s up to Forrester to show if it’s change the people want, Corzine will provide more of the same and that property tax relief and additional state spending are incompatible.

The Jon Corzine Game Plan:
A. Buy a Senate seat
B. when it doesn't pay enough, buy the governorship
C. when it doesn't pay enough, buy the presidency
Stop Jon Corzine!
